The National Archaeological Museum of Florence - How to visit the museum and what to see

The National Archaeological Museum of Florence is located in the Palazzo della Crocetta, which dates back to 1620, built by Giulio Parigi, as the residence of Princess Maria Maddalena de Medici, in Piazza Santissima Annunziata.

Originally, the museum was inaugurated as an “Etruscan museum” and was located in the premises of the Cenacolo di Fuligno in Via Faenza. Originally it included only Etruscan and Roman finds. Soon, with the increase of the collections, another location became necessary and from 1880, the museum was moved to its present location.

Today the museum includes the Etruscan section, the Roman section, the Greek section, the section known as the “Egyptian Museum” and the numismatic section.

The Etruscan section is located on the first floor and suffered serious damage following the flood that hit Florence in 1966. The highlight of this collection is undoubtedly the Chimera of Arezzo. It is an Etruscan bronze representing a lion in an aggressive position with its mouth open and with bent claws, with a goat's head that comes from the back and a snake instead of a tail that attacks by biting one of the goat's horns. The Chimera is on display in a room next to another masterpiece of the museum, the in-round statue of the Arringatore. The bronze portrays the Etruscan nobleman Aule Meteli with the Roman toga, while he raises his arm towards the observer and the hypothetical crowd.

Among the most important works of the Roman section we find the bronze of the Idolino of Pesaro, The Torso of Livorno and the Minerva of Arezzo.

The Greek section is located on the second floor and includes a vast collection of Attic ceramics recovered in Etruscan tombs and coming from exchanges with the Greek world. Among the most interesting works we find the Francois Vase, the Cups of the Little Masters, a red-figure Hydria, the two Kouroi of the Apollo and the Apollino Milani.

The section called "Egyptian Museum" is second in Italy only to the Egyptian Museum in Turin. The exhibits found within this section cover many of the daily activities of Ancient Egypt, with objects also made of fragile materials such as wood, fabric and bone. Among the most interesting works is the female portrait from the necropolis of Al Fayum.

The numismatic section of the museum (coin cabinet) consists of 80,000 and in particular preserves the most populous collection of Etruscan coins in the world.

The Archaeological Museum of Florence also has a monumental garden that can be visited by tourists in which some Etruscan tombs have been recomposed, with the most original materials possible, among which the Inghirami Tomb of Volterra stands out, with its original alabaster urns.
