The San Marco Museum in Florence - How to visit the museum and what to see

The San Marco Museum is an Italian state museum located in Florence. It is located in the monumental part of an ancient Dominican convent located in Piazza San Marco.

It became a museum starting from 1869. It was built by the will of Cosimo dei Medici who commissioned its architectural structure to Michelozzo. The fame of the museum is mainly due to the presence of works by Beato Angelico.

After the ticket office, the museum itinerary starts from the cloister known as Sant’Antonino, built by Michelozzo around 1440. The Cloister is decorated with frescoes by Beato Angelico. The large fresco "The Crucifixion of San Domenico" is one of the most famous art work of this section of the museum. The fresco is located in the north-west corner. The Hospice Room opens onto the Cloister of Sant’Antonino. Originally the humblest pilgrims were welcomed in this room. This space is entirely dedicated to Beato Angelico and collects his most famous panel paintings. Among the most famous works there are "The Last Judgment", "The Deposition", "The Altarpiece of Bosco ai Frati", "The great Tabernacle of the Linaioli" in collaboration with Lorenzo Ghiberti and the "Pala di San Marco".

Continuing the path inside the museum, there is the Chapter Hall, also frescoed by Beato Angelico. The "Crucifixion" is significant and allegorical. The iconography of this work is original because, in addition to the canonical characters (the Virgin, Magdalene, St. John the Evangelist), a series of saints linked to Florence, the Medici and the Dominican order are represented.

In addition, among the works placed in the Chapter Hall, the Lunette of the Angelico with St. Peter Martyr making the sign of silence and the Crucifix sculpted by Baccio da Montelupo in 1496 already in the convent church stand out.

San Marco is not only the museum of Beato Angelico. Actually, in recent years, some rooms adjacent to the Grande Refettorio have been recovered. Here the service areas were located, such as the kitchen where a good number of paintings by Fra Bartolomeo, the second friar painter, were exhibited. Of particular interest are the "Pala della Signoria" in the Sala di Fra Bartolomeo, and the "Last Judgment" in the Sala del Lavabo. Of great impact is also the Refectory Grande, the one used by the monks of the convent, with the painting of the "Miraculous Supper of San Domenico".

Moving on to the first floor, you will find the cells where the monks slept and the library. The forty-four cells are arranged along three corridors, in the cells there is a cycle of frescoes by Beato Angelico which were to inspire the monks in prayer.

In front of the stairs is the beautiful fresco of the Annunciation, dated 1442. In this work the master used the precious azurite and also used gold inserts. On the first floor there is also the Library built by Michelozzo by the will of Cosimo de Medici. It is a very elegant and bright space characterized by a series of slender columns. A well-lit structure that facilitated reading and study. It was the first library in Italy open to the public.
