The Boboli Gardens in Florence - How to visit the park and what to see

The Boboli Gardens is a historic park in the city of Florence, open to the public. Known as the Grand Ducal garden of Palazzo Pitti, it is immediately adjacent to the Forte di Belvedere, a military and strategic outpost for the safety of the sovereign and his family. The large garden was therefore born as the park of the Medici palace of Palazzo Pitti.

The Boboli Gardens, which welcomes 800,000 million visitors every year, is one of the largest examples of an Italian garden in the world and is a real open-air museum.

The entrance ticket to Boboli also includes a visit to the Bardini Garden and the Porcelain Museum.

The Gardens were built between the 16th and 19th centuries, by the will of the Medici family and were enlarged by the successive ruling dynasties: Lorraine and Savoy. They occupy an area of 30 hectares, only partly flat.

STRUCTURE OF THE BOBOLI GARDEN

The Boboli Gardens overall have a vaguely elongated triangle configuration, with steep slopes and two axes that cross near the Neptune Fountain. The main axis climbs the Boboli hill through a horse-shaped amphitheater, the Boboli Amphitheater. The Amphitheater marks the point where the hill was excavated to take the stone fortress used to build Palazzo Pitti.

At the center of this vast area, stands a gigantic obelisk that was transported from Luxor and placed here in 1789 surrounded by sculptures. Further up, beyond the Amphitheater, there is the Basin of Neptune which houses the Neptune Fountain in the center, with the statue of the God of the sea emerging from a rocky spur on which there are also naiads and tritons.

BOBOLI GARDEN - WHAT TO SEE

Beyond the amphitheater, going down the hill towards the north-east, you reach the Kaffeehaus, a Rococo-style pavilion covered by an exotic windowed dome and marked by terraces, the work of Zanobi del Rosso. In front of the Kaffeehaus there is the lawn with the Ganymede Fountain in the center, while on the left again on this side is the Grotticina della Madama or delle Capre.

THE CAVE OF BUONTALENTI

Continuing the visit inside the Boboli Gardens, we come across one of the most valuable and famous elements, the Buontalenti Grotto. This work was begun by Giorgio Vasari, who created the lower part of the facade, but its complete construction is due to Bernardo Buontalenti, who built it between 1583 and 1593 on behalf of Francesco I de Medici. The outside of the cave is characterized by a large entrance between two columns surmounted by an architrave, with concretions similar to stalagmites above, while similar concretions similar to stalactites come from below. On both sides of the entrance there are two niches that contain the statues of Ceres and Apollo by Baccio Bandinelli. Inside the cave there are three rooms. In the first room we find works by Bernardino Poccetti, whose theme is chaos, the shapeless matter that finds order and harmony through metamorphosis. The second room houses the marble group of Paris who kidnaps Elena by Vincenzo de Rossi. Finally we find the third room dominated by the Fountain of the Venus that comes out of the Gianbologna bathroom.

By purchasing the Boboli garden ticket, you can also visit the interiors of the Buontalenti Grotto. Among the precious sculptures that enrich the Boboli Gardens, one of the most curious is the famous Bacchino with the fountain of the same name and depicts the obese dwarf Morgante, the most popular of Cosimo I's court dwarves.

Returning to the division into two axes and along the secondary one of the Boboli Gardens we find the so-called Prato dell’Uccellare, a large lawn surrounded by centuries-old holm oaks and cypresses. Below the Prato dell’Uccellare we find another lawn, the so-called Prato del Pegaso. Always following the secondary axis, we come to a wide avenue with a steep descent, the Viottolone, flanked by two rows of cypresses and cut by three side avenues that create six compartments. At the end of the Viottolone, you arrive at the Isolotto, where a large circular pool is the protagonist with the island in the center connected to the mainland by two walkways. The center of the island is decorated by the Gianbologna Ocean Fountain.

Halfway between the Palace and the far end of the garden is the Limonaia di Boboli. In winter, the lemon house is crowded with a huge amount of plants, especially citrus fruits, some of which date back to the Medici era. Continuing the path along the parallel path we find the Convent of Annalena, the Palazzina della Meridiana, the Giardino del Conte and the Giardino degli Ananassi, so called because in the past exotic plants were grown while today the garden houses a rich collection of aquatic plants.
