The main works exhibited at the Uffizi and what to see

The Uffizi Gallery really offers countless hints for those who love art. It is very difficult to summarize in a few lines which are the works not to be missed at the Uffizi Museum. Anyway, here is our advice . Especially if the time you have available is limited, we have drawn up a basic path with the works to which you can devote your attention during the Uffizi tour.

The recommended itinerary begins in the Levante corridor, on the second floor. The sculptures arranged along the corridor are ancient half-busts and represent the most famous Roman emperors. On the opposite side are the statues of their spouses. The walls are decorated with two series of paintings, the smaller ones form the so-called Jovian Series, and represent the illustrious characters of the past; the larger paintings instead make up the Aulica Series, here the members of the Medici family are portrayed.

The first room is the Sala delle Maestà with three magnificent altarpieces. On the left the Madonna Rucellai by Duccio di Buoninsegna painted in 1285, on the right the work of Cimabue with the Madonna di Santa Trinita created in 1280, in the center the room we find the Madonna di Ognissanti, one of the most famous masterpieces by Giotto in the early 1300s.

Following room 3 with the Annunciation by Simone Martini, one of the most important examples of Sienese Gothic painting. In this work it is already possible to perceive a hint of perspective. A real novelty if we think that the work was built in 1333! The importance of this canvas lies precisely in the great union between innovation and the past, a past recalled by the use of the gold background.

The next room opens to the International Gothic. The Adoration of the Magi by Gentile da Fabriano is undoubtedly the most important work of this period. This work was commissioned to Gentile da Fabriano by the richest man in Florence in those years, Palla Strozzi.

The next room is dedicated to Filippo Lippi. The most important work in this room for its beauty is undoubtedly The Madonna with Child and Angels. This painting, which hides a very romantic story behind it and was the most important starting point for the artistic life of another painter who was an illustrious pupil of Filippo Lippi: Sandro Botticelli.

Finally, here are the rooms dedicated to Botticelli. A new exhibition space, entirely dedicated to the famous painter. Here it is possible to admire the first indisputable symbols of the Uffizi: Spring Allegory, the Birth of Venus, Pallas and Centaur, the Calumny, the Annunciation by Cestello. All works of the great Renaissance painter.

From genius to genius, the room dedicated to the priceless masterpieces of Leonardo da Vinci follows. From the Adoration of the Magi to the Baptism of Christ, to the splendid Annunciation.

Room number 38 houses the only painting by Michelangelo in Florence: the Tondo Doni. Probably painted for the Doni-Strozzi couple. The scene depicting the Holy Family is full of novelties and will ensure this extraordinary artist a place also among the inspirers of Mannerism. Together with Michelangelo in this room, the Modonna del Cardellino by Raffaello Sanzio.

Going down to the first floor, it is not possible to visit the rooms dedicated to Titian, where it is possible to admire the Venus of Urbino.

Finally, the rooms dedicated to the great Caravaggio and his contemporaries. By the great Michelangelo Merisi we find here the Head of Medusa and Bacchus.

This is just a taste of the beauty that can be admired at the Uffizi Gallery. In fact, we have not mentioned the masterpieces by Paolo Uccello, Filippino Lippi, Piero della Francesca, Bronzino, Pontormo, Rosso Fiorentino and many others.
