The National Bargello Museum in Florence - How to visit the museum and what to see

The Bargello National Museum is housed in one of the most important medieval palaces in the city, Palazzo del Podestà, in the immediate vicinity of Palazzo Vecchio, and houses the most important collection of Renaissance sculptures. The museum was founded in 1865. The exhibition unfolds on the three floors of the building.

On the ground floor you can admire the fascinating overall view of the courtyard and the Michelangelo room. Among the works of Michelangelo Buonarroti, the Bacchus (1497), the Tondo Pitti (1504) representing the Madonna with the Child Jesus and San Giovannino and the David-Apollo, a later work by Michelangelo and the Brutus, the only surviving Michelangelo bust, stand out. Some small works sculpted by Bartolomeo Ammannati, Tribolo and Baccio Bandinelli surround the room.

On the first floor there is the imposing Sala di Donatello with the most famous works of the master including the David, a bronze sculpture created between 1439 and 1443. The young David, after having won the gigantic Goliath, is standing victorious and he rests his left foot on the cheek of the defeated giant whose head lies on the ground. David is represented by the artist completely naked, he only has decorated shoes that cover part of his feet. The young man with his right hand holds the sword with which he beheaded Goliath while in the left he holds a stone. This work is the emblem of the Italian fifteenth century, the first relief in the round, intended as a work in itself, free from architectural elements. Also on the first floor are the Sala del Trecento and the Sala degli Avori, where precious pieces donated to the museum by the collector and antiquarian Louis Carrand in 1888 are kept. The Carrand room is not only striking for its collection of precious objects but also for the fascinating frescoed ceiling that recalls a starry sky. From the Carrand Room it is possible to access the Chapel of Mary Magdalene, the ancient prayer space of the Podestà.

On the second and last floor are the Verrocchio room and the rooms of Andrea and Giovanni della Robbia, the Bronzetti room, the Bruzzichelli room, the Majolica room and the Armory room where the surviving pieces of the dispersion of the Medici armory. In these rooms you can see coins, majolica, glass, weapons, medals and busts of Florentines and illustrious figures of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, from Battista Sforza to Federico da Montefeltro.
