THE MUSEUMS OF PALAZZO PITTI - THE PALATINE GALLERY AND THE GALLERY OF MODERN ART

The Palatine Gallery, the Royal Apartments, the Modern Art Gallery and the Treasury of the Grand Dukes are the main museums all located in the splendid Medici building, Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The Palatine Gallery and the Royal Apartments occupy the first floor of Palazzo Pitti while the Gallery of Modern Art is located on the second floor of the building, together with the Costume Gallery. On the ground floor we find another museum, the Treasury of the Grand Dukes (better known as the Museo degli Argenti).

The Palatine Gallery is divided into 28 rooms and is located in some of the most beautiful halls on the noble floor of the Medici palace, rooms decorated with frescoes and stuccos. The collection of paintings exhibited here dates back to the late Renaissance and Baroque periods and is considered the most important example of a "picture gallery" in Italy. Unlike a typical modern museum layout, the paintings here are not exhibited with systematic criteria, but purely decorative. These are in fact hung on the walls of the halls, covering most of the surface of the walls following symmetrical patterns. The gallery arrangement, enhanced by the carved and gilded frames, was intended to amaze and amaze the visitors who entered these staterooms.

The museum's collection consists of around 500 paintings and includes the largest concentration of works by Raphael in the world, as well as paintings by Titian, Tintoretto, Caravaggio and Rubens.

The Gallery of Modern Art is located on the second floor of the Pitti Palace. From the windows of the halls, you can enjoy a magnificent view of both Florence and the Boboli Gardens, the park that surrounds the Florentine palace of the Medici. The collection of this museum is divided into 30 rooms and offers a complete panorama of Italian artistic production from the end of the eighteenth century to the early decades of the twentieth century. The rooms exhibit works belonging to Neoclassicism, Romanticism and the important nucleus of painting of the Macchiaioli school, largely from the collections of Diego Martelli.

The Treasury of the Grand Dukes (known as the Silver Museum) is located on the ground floor of the Pitti Palace, occupying the rooms of the Medici family's summer apartment. The museum is also called the Treasury of the Medici or the Grand Dukes and houses a vast collection of priceless pieces of gold, silver, crystal, ivory and semi-precious stones.
