WHAT TO SEE AT THE ACADEMY GALLERY

The Accademia Gallery in Florence is located in the heart of the historic city center, a few steps from Piazza Duomo.

The Accademia gallery is one of the most visited Florentine museums because it houses one of the most famous statues in the world, the original of Michelangelo Buonarroti's David. The masterpieces exhibited in this museum, also known as the “David museum” are however many others.

The Michelangelo museum

The Accademia di Firenze museum exhibits the largest number of Buonarroti sculptures in the world. There are even 7 statues of the great master that are placed in this museum.

The gallery leading to the marble colossus is in fact decorated with the statues of the prisons, a group of six statues, partly unfinished, that Michelangelo created to decorate the tomb of Pope Julius II. This environment is precisely called the Galleria dei Prigioni. Of the 6 statues, two are exhibited in the Louvre, while the other 4 in this gallery. The 4 prisons in Florence were initially used by Cosimo I de 'Medici as an ornament at the Buontalenti grotto located in the Boboli Gardens.

Also inside the Accademia Gallery it is possible to admire the Pietà Palestrina and the San Matteo, both sculptures by Michelangelo.

In the Sala del Colosso there are instead numerous pictorial works of the '400 and' 500 Florentine artists including Paolo Uccello, Perugino, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Filippino Lippi while in the center of the room it is possible to admire the original plaster sketch of the famous sculpture by Giambologa, the Rape of the Sabines.

The Tribuna and the David

The Tribuna is the room created specifically to enhance the beauty of the famous David. The work portrays the biblical hero David, just before facing the giant Goliath. The David was defined by some as "the most beautiful artistic object ever made by man". The statue is over 5 meters high, it is located in the center of the square room, placed at the end of the prison gallery. A solution that allows visitors to admire the work in all its majesty and perfection with a 360 ° view of the marble colossus.

From the back of the gallery, the David appears in the background of a semi-spherical niche decorated with neoclassical motifs, illuminated by a glass ceiling, the absolute protagonist of this space created ad hoc to enhance the masterpiece.

However, the treasures of the Accademia Gallery do not end here. The Gipsoteca, the Giotteschi room, the 13th and early 14th century rooms, the International Gothic Room… and much more are available to visitors.
